Farewell to Banff

Today was our last day in Canada. We had a wonderful time, and filled our days with lots of sightseeing and activities.  We'd have to have an Alleve appetizer after the days we did three hikes!  We finally found the time to rent bikes and explore that way.  (Check out the Capt. Morgan bikers!)

We first hiked, then biked around Vermillion Lakes,  just outside Banff.

Not too far from where we stayed were the Hoodoos,  natural formations formed by erosion...and time.

We spent one whole day driving up to Jasper National Park, through the Columbia Icefields, and driving past one magnificent scene after another.  This was Waterfowl Lake, but it should have been called Mirror Lake.

Along the way we hiked up to the Bow Lake overlook.  The color of the lakes is vivid teal - gorgeous.

A must stop was at the powerful Athabasca Falls.

A roadside flower....

Edith Cavell was a nurse responsible for saving many lives and helping many people escape Belgium during World War I.  To honor her heroism,  she had a mountain peak named for her.  We hiked the trail and also got a view of the Angel Glacier (note the angel wings).

One of the neatest things we did was to ride the gondola to the top of Sulphur Mountain.

The city of Banff, as seen from the top of the mountain.

Looking down at the Banff Springs Hotel, where the rich and famous stay (not us!)

You can hike to the summit of Mt. Sulphur after you get to the top of the gondola.

Just another way of looking at the scenery...

This memorial, in British Columbia, was constructed after the completion of the Trans Canada Highway in 1962.

We're so glad we decided to come back to the Rockies.  Maybe we won't have to wait another 40 years to come back!  We filled our days with lots of exploring, sightseeing, hiking, and of course photography.  We're looking forward to the next phase of the trip.  Next stop - Oregon.
